About 850 species of birds have been sighted in Costa Rica which is remarkable considering the relatively small size of the country. This explains why Costa Rica is an important birdwatcher's destination. If you know where to go it is quite easy to see impressive birds of all types.
The Macaws
There are 16 different parrot species. The most impressive is the Scarlet Macaw. They can be found along the mid Pacific to South Pacific coasts. There are important nesting sites at the mouth of the Tempisque River on the way to Jaco and the Carara National Park. The Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park (see http://laparios.com) are popular Macaw sighting areas. They can often been seeing flying in pairs since they mate for life with the same partner.
Hummingbirds
More than 50 species of hummingbirds can be found in Costa Rica. These birds are beautiful to watch and have become very popular amongst birdwatchers. The hummingbird beats its wings very rapidly thus causing a humming sound. They are able to hover in one place and even backwards. They consume a great amount of energy in order to do this and have had to develop a strategy of lowering their body temperatures in order to survive they cold mountain nights.debajo de la frase "their body temperatures in order to survive they cold mountain nights."
Toucans
An impressive sight is a brightly colored toucan with it's enormous bill. There are six different species spread around the country. Amazingly, reforestation efforts seem to have had beneficial effects and several species have been spotted living in the central metropolitan San Jose area!
Quetzal
Monteverde Cloudforest in the North Pacific is a birdwatchers Mecca. The high altitude and humidity produce an almost permanent mist which makes walking through the nature reserves here a wonderful experience. The Resplendent Quetzal makes it's home here. This is a gorgeous bird with metallic green feathers and a bright read belly. Enormous white tail feathers complete the image of a spectacular sight. The Quetzal is notoriously shy yet it is almost impossible to not see one during a hike in Monteverde.
